I Had This Thing

Original Mixed Media Diptych on Canvas

In I Had This Thing, Linwood pairs the quiet strength of the horse with an energetic field of looping, interconnected lines. The diptych feels like two sides of a memory—the recognizable and the abstract, what can be held onto and what begins to unravel with time.

The horse emerges softly from layers of charcoal gray, taupe, ivory, and graphite, its lowered head giving the composition an introspective tenderness. Against it, the second panel shifts into dusty rose and overlapping ribbons of burgundy, rust, and blue-gray. The continuous lines twist, cross, disappear, and return, suggesting the complicated paths through which memories and experiences remain connected.

Throughout the work, Linwood builds his surface with his signature layering of paint, graphite, charcoal, collage, handwritten fragments, and gestural marks. Subtle imagery is buried beneath subsequent layers, creating a piece that continues to reveal itself the longer it is viewed.
